The journey of the Kapelus, Dorfman and Hotz families is a vehicle for telling the story of Lithuanian Jewry. their history, the history of Lithuania, the migration process to South Africa and their acculturation in South Africa as well as the economic, political and racial tensions that so influenced their lives and the lives of the first South African born members of their families. To many descendants of the “Russian jews”, as they were called, the story told will seem so very familiar.
